Mixed Methods Preaching Conference

MAY 2 – 5, 2022

We are proud and excited to present this second conference in a virtual format as a recipient of the Transformative Grant from the Gilead COMPASS Faith Coordinating Center at Wake Forest School of Divinity. This Transformative Grant Initiative highlights the intersection of HIV-AIDS and communities of color, striving to “educate congregations in order to dispel the stigma and support communities of color who are touched by the aids epidemic.”

Method Matters:
THE MIXED METHODS PREACHING CONFERENCE

It is with great joy and anticipation that we invite you to participate in the second Mixed Methods Preaching Conference of the Ph.D. Program of African American Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric at Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, Indiana.

We have chosen the theme for our conference as: “Preaching the Inexhaustible Love of God,” based in Ephesians 3:18: That you may have the power and be strong to apprehend and grasp with all the saints [God’s devoted people, the experience of that love] what is the breadth and length and height and depth [of it]; (AMPC).

As one of the strategies to accomplish this renaissance, we offer a Mixed Methods Preaching Conference to help preachers love and improve their preaching. We offer sermons, lectures, education, homiletical instruction, and preaching labs where participants are taught method by our Ph.D. students and actually get to preach a sermon and have it critiqued by an instructor trained in homiletics. We have found the preaching and critiquing of the sermons, after instruction on the homiletical method, to be the most meaningful for helping students improve their preaching. Our inaugural conference was such an overwhelming success that participants and numerous preachers have demanded a second.

Our conference goal is to help preachers preach powerful sermons indication of the inexhaustible love of God in Ephesians 3 such that marginalized people living in stigma and without support, for example, persons impacted by the AIDS epidemic, might be fully included and welcomed in the family of God.

Our conference is co-hosted by three of the leading preachers across the country who have demonstrated and preached of the inexhaustible love of God, removing stigmas and welcoming people into the family of God: Dr. Frederick D. Haynes III, pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas; Dr. Gina Marcia Stewart, pastor of Christ Missionary Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee; and Bishop Claude R. Alexander, pastor of The Park Church of Charlotte, North Carolina.
